What’s Possible with Unreal Engine?

A whole lot.

But before we look at what’s possible with Unreal Engine let’s make sure we’re familiar with what it is.

Unreal Engine, initially, was a video game development tool created by Epic Games for anyone working in real-time rendering technology. What is real-time rendering? Let’s start with rendering - rendering is the conversion of a 3D object or area, into a 2D image. For those of you who have played a 3D video game before, think about how you’re capable of exploring 3D spaces on a 2D screen.

Historically speaking, rendering used to take hours, if not days to accomplish, and making an adjustment would require you to restart the process. With the introduction of real-time engines (such as Unreal Engine) this process is capable of completing with near-immediacy (hence the label, real-time rendering). This allows the user to easily make adjustments to their 3D projects, without wasting time to constantly re-render their changes.

Since its creation in the late ‘90s, use cases for Unreal Engine have gone well beyond the gaming universe to support digital creators in various industries, including film and television, fashion, automotive design, and advertising - to name a few.
